When your brain doesn’t filter sound, quieter is everything

With ADHD, the problem is rarely that sounds are too loud. It’s that your brain doesn’t filter them — the hum of the fridge, a colleague’s keyboard and the traffic outside arrive at the same volume as the person talking to you.

Happy Ears take 25–27 dB off everything, evenly, so the background finally sits in the background and you can hear what matters. Reusable, washable, three sizes, and small enough that nobody asks.

Start with the right fit

Fidgeting with a plug that doesn’t sit right becomes its own distraction. A Discovery Pack has all three sizes, so you find the one you forget you’re wearing — with a money-back guarantee if none of them fit.

Why noise hits harder with ADHD

Most people’s brains quietly sort sound into “important” and “ignore”. ADHD brains tend to skip the sorting. Everything comes through, which is why an open-plan office, a busy classroom or a family dinner can feel like ten radios playing at once — and why it is so tiring.

Overstimulation, not just distraction. When every sound competes for attention, energy runs out fast — that is the feeling of being “done” by 2 pm. Taking the edge off the background gives that energy back.

Hyperfocus needs a door you can close. Getting into a task is hard; getting knocked out of it by a hallway conversation is easy. Earplugs are the cheapest “do not disturb” sign there is.

Sleep is where it starts. Racing thoughts are loud enough without a ticking clock or a snoring partner. Many people with ADHD tell us the night is where the earplugs earned their keep first.

Earplugs don’t treat ADHD. They reduce the amount of sound your brain has to filter, which many people find makes the rest of the day easier to manage.

“I am neurodivergent and as such find loud noises in busy spaces incredibly hard to deal with. […] I no longer get as stressed as I used to get when on the tube or in busy places; I feel absolutely at ease with myself which I never thought possible. And inside I can actually focus.”

“As a recently diagnosed Autistic woman with Autistic children Happy Ears have been a game changer! […] The small size has been perfect for my 6 year old and I can use both the medium and large comfortably. Happy Ears cancel out background noise whilst allowing us to still hear voices and participate in conversations.”
Verified buyer — autism, family
“I’m on the autism spectrum and can get overwhelmed and frustrated with too much sound, especially in the morning — which is sadly the reality of my job. These help me do my work without getting tense and souring my mood.”
Verified buyer — autism, work
“I wanted ear plugs for the office because I work in an open space and I hate people talking around me since I can’t concentrate, and listening to music can also be distracting. […] L unexpectedly was the most comfortable.”
Verified buyer — open-plan office
“I bought this for my noise sensitive autistic daughter and it has been a Godsend. Her focus at school, especially in the engineering workshop, has improved immeasurably. Being a teenager she is also very self conscious so would not wear over the ear ear defenders; but she was happy to wear these as they are barely noticeable.”

Earplugs made for ADHD days

Natural sound, only quieter

Foam muffles the high frequencies and makes voices mushy. Happy Ears lower every frequency by about the same amount — you hear the meeting, not the air conditioning.

Small enough to forget

No stems sticking out, no colours to explain. Clear or green, tucked inside the ear — discreet enough for the office, the lecture hall or the bus.

Comfortable for the whole day

Soft, non-expanding material in three sizes. Nothing to squeeze, roll or replace — wash them and put them back in.

Reusable, not disposable

One pair replaces hundreds of foam plugs. The Ocean Plastics version is made from recycled marine plastic.

Where they help most

Open-plan office — keyboards, calls and corridors fade; your own call doesn’t. Studying and deep work — plugs in, phone face down, one task; see our study & focus page. School and university — small enough that no one asks.

Shops, transport, restaurants — the places where overstimulation builds before you notice. Family evenings — kitchen noise, TV and three conversations at once, without leaving the room. Sleep — a snoring partner, a ticking clock, the neighbours; see earplugs for sleeping.

If sound is painful rather than distracting, or you are looking for sensory-overload specifics, our earplugs for noise sensitivity and sensory overload page goes deeper. Earplugs reduce airborne sound by 25–27 dB (SNR, CE-certified under EN 352) and, because the reduction is even, speech stays clear.
